Consumer demand is encouraging a fundamental shift in market design. “Local food” supply chains are forming to shorten the geographic distance between farm and fork. Regional farm economies or “foodsheds” could become enduring complements to the production agriculture industry’s activity in the global marketplace. “Foodshed” economics will work as large- and small-scale farmers find the common ground needed to help Americans rediscover the value of agricultural development.
Large- and small-scale farming, represent seemingly competing visions. One supplies global markets and the other focuses on localized markets. Both visions are needed for the food-and-farm industry to meet consumer demands.
